TITLE: Special Education Teacher
ENDORSEMENT: 221
JOB GOALS:
- To support the delivery of the Houston School District’s written, taught, tested, and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement.
- To ensure the reflection and communication of a positive image and attitude toward decisions and functions of the district as they relate to the public, staff, parents and students.
- To plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Holds a current MS teaching license and special education certification.
- Has knowledge of curriculum framework and relevant coursework.
- Is highly qualified in appropriate grade and subject.
- Demonstrates proficiency in oral and written communication.
- Displays ability to establish and maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, parents and the public.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Principal or designee.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
- Develops and maintains written lesson plans based on MS Curriculum Framework and district pacing guide.
- Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Develops and implements instruction and assessments at the appropriate Depth of Knowledge (DOK) level.
- Prepares classroom for class activities and keeps classrooms neat, clean, and orderly.
- Provides a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
- Identifies and selects different instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs.
- Instructs and monitors students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
- Uses relevant technology to support instruction.
- Modifies instruction and develops interventions based on data.
- Observes and evaluates students’ performance and development, based on data (common assessments, universal screeners, etc).
- Assigns and grades class work, homework, tests and assignments and provides appropriate feedback to students and parents.
- Encourages and monitors the progress of individual students.
- Maintains accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development.
- Updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
- Manages student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
- Maintains discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
- Participates in department meetings, school meetings and parent meetings.
- Communicates necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and needs.
- Stays abreast of current developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and makes relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
- Participates and implements new strategies obtained through professional development.
- Maintains high standards, ethical behavior and confidentiality of student issues.
- Exemplifies strong work ethics and professionalism (i.e., promptness, attendance and professional dress).
- Provides instruction in the inclusion class to all students.
- Collaborates, plans, and delivers instruction with the regular classroom teacher.
- Maintains and updates Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Complies with district level responsibilities and training.
- Stays abreast of current special education laws and regulations.
- Sends notices for review and revision.
OTHER DUTIES:
Performs other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The salary and length of contract shall be established by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the principal or designee in accordance with provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
